Follow us for a weekly analysis of some of our favourite musical moments.

Today we are presenting an analysis of the Notturno from the incidental music for Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This slow movement explores the nocturnal aspect of Shakespeare’s play. Some of its main characteristics include a sophisticated level of attention to timbre as an organizing principle (mostly seen in the orchestration) and the use of several topics from the overture.
