After a long and bumpy drive, I finally reached the charming mountain village of Taili in Guizhou, China. It’s home to the Miao people, one of China’s minority groups. As I stepped out of the van, I was greeted by the sound of lushengs, a unique woodwind instrument that’s a staple in Miao communities. But that wasn’t all - I was immediately surrounded by a bunch of curious kids, wondering why a foreigner was at their elementary school. The reason: My friend, a soccer coach, was hosting a soccer clinic to teach the kids of Taili and a few other coaches about the sport.
I was there to capture the experience with my cameras and get a glimpse into the life of this remote village. I’ve heard tales of rural Chinese villages like this being lifted out of poverty for years, but I’ve never had the chance to see it for myself. Is this my chance? My friend mentioned that organized sports can teach kids valuable life lessons, but can they also provide opportunities for remote village kids to pursue higher education?
