Muslim vlog in Birmingham 🇬🇧 — Today I explored Alum Rock, known as the Muslim capital of the UK, before heading to the famous Black Country Living Museum to compare modern Muslim life in England with how British life looked over 100 years ago. This Birmingham vlog is full of culture, halal food, Islamic shops, masjids, and powerful reflections on Muslim identity in the UK.
The day started in Derby as I shared my plan to head into Birmingham by train. I spoke about the reality of the UK train system — often overpriced with outdated trains, bad WiFi, and uncomfortable seats. Using split fares, I explained how you can save money when traveling in England. After arriving at Birmingham New Street station, I was blown away by how modern and bright it looked. With the huge bull statue at the centre, it honestly felt like an airport — one of the most impressive stations in the UK.
From there, we jumped in an Uber and headed straight to Alum Rock. I had no idea what to expect, but the moment I arrived I could feel the atmosphere was different. Afghan flags, Pakistani clothes, halal supermarkets, and Muslims everywhere. It genuinely felt like stepping into another world.
We went into Al Halal Supermarket, and it was an experience in itself — imported vegetables I’d never seen before, unique spices and smells, and the Qur’an playing softly in the background. It felt peaceful, almost like being on holiday in a Muslim country, while still being right here in England.
Walking further into Alum Rock, I noticed shops turned into mosques, Bangladeshi flags, and a community made up of Muslims from all over the world. We entered a bazaar styled like Pakistan, with a Pakistani bus painted on the front. Inside, the stalls were filled with Islamic clothing, cultural fabrics, and items from different Muslim traditions. I even bought myself a Moroccan thobe, and the staff were so kind — telling me about the many reverts who come to their shop.
Outside, we saw fabric shops making their own clothes from scratch, queues of Muslims outside fast food takeaways, and even bread scattered on the ground — left behind as charity or for animals, a practice common in some cultures. I also visited a street that had once been spray painted with a racist slogan. I spoke about how acts like this are only designed to create hate and division, but they don’t represent the truth of the Muslim community.
For lunch, we stopped at an Afghani restaurant in Alum Rock. The food was incredible — we had Kabuli Pulao, chicken karahi, and a huge naan bread that felt bigger than the table. The flavors were amazing, and the staff treated us with real hospitality.
We then visited Madina Mosque in Alum Rock, a peaceful and beautiful masjid where I reflected on how important these places are for Muslims in the UK. The masjid was calm, welcoming, and a reminder of how central Islam is to the daily lives of the community here.
After soaking up Muslim life in Birmingham, I wanted to show the contrast. We headed to the Black Country Living Museum, a place that recreates what life was like in the West Midlands over 100 years ago. The museum shows traditional homes, schools, factories, coal mines, and shops from the industrial era. It felt surreal comparing the old England of the past to the modern Muslim life I had just seen in Alum Rock.
This video captures both sides of Birmingham — the thriving, diverse Muslim community today, and the history of English life in the Black Country. It’s a journey through culture, history, Islam, and identity, and a perfect example of how Muslims in the UK are part of the fabric of British society.
If you’re Muslim in Birmingham, Alum Rock is a must-visit. If you’re exploring the UK, the Black Country Museum is one of the best places to learn about England’s history. Together, these places show the balance of heritage and modern life.
