Pre-emphasis and de-emphasis are signal processing techniques employed in communication systems to enhance the quality of transmitted audio signals. Pre-emphasis involves boosting the higher frequencies of an audio signal before transmission, typically in the range of 2 kHz to 5 kHz. This is done to compensate for the natural attenuation of high-frequency components that occurs during transmission, reducing the impact of noise and improving signal-to-noise ratio. On the receiving end, de-emphasis is applied to attenuate the boosted high frequencies and restore the original frequency balance. These techniques are commonly used in FM (Frequency Modulation) broadcasting and audio recording to ensure a clearer and more faithful reproduction of the original signal, mitigating the effects of noise and interference in the transmission process.
