Independence in 1960 led to political instability and conflicts, including the bizarre and brutal dictatorship of Jean-Bédel Bokassa, who proclaimed himself emperor. Over 200 ethnic groups coexist in the Central African Republic, practicing Christianity, Islam, and indigenous beliefs. Despite its wealth in natural resources like diamonds and gold, it remains one of the least developed economies globally.
