South Korean prosecutors have asked a court in Seoul to sentence former president Yoon Suk Yeol to death for leading an insurrection after he briefly imposed martial law in late 2024. A special counsel made the request during the final hearing on the charge at the Seoul Central District Court. If convicted, South Korean law allows only two penalties for the crime: death or life imprisonment. A verdict and sentence are expected in the coming weeks, though executions have not been carried out in the country since 1997.
