KUTV: Arm bars and choke holds are just a few moves that many men and women at Southern Utah University got a chance to learn Wednesday during a self-defense seminar held by the ROTC and Utah National Guard.



April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and leaders in these military, Army organizations, like Sgt. First Class Matthew Raines, wanted to give women and men who live on and off SUU's campus a chance to learn how to protect themselves in a dangerous situation.



"It's just situational techniques that can help them escape and increase their chances of surviving a dangerous situation," Raines said.



"Some of them are little difficult. One in particular is the arm bar from the bottom [that] can be very difficult for some people because it's not a natural movement for your body."



According to the Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women and one in 16 men are likely to be sexually assaulted in college. Research by the Utah Department of health also shows that one in three women in Utah will experience sexual assault in their lifetime.



"The reality is, people have been doing horrible things for a long time and the reality is the type of training available out there right now is just so much more broad than it used to be," Raines said.
