According to ArabNet Business Intelligence, the number of tech investors in MENA has surpassed 200, with more than 1100 investments taking place over the past 5 years. The region’s earliest funds (those started around 2009/10) are nearing maturity and need to liquidate their portfolios in order to return money to LPs, while many of the region’s older startups have been unable to build needed traction over the years and are faced with the tough decision of having to pull the plug. Such less-successful portfolio companies can still generate value for the fund through M&A: acquired for talent, for tech, for customers, for market share or market entry, or a combination. As a result, the region will see a rise in acqui-hires, exists, mergers and startup closures. This panel discusses how fund managers can optimize overall fund performance by knowing when / how to pull the plug (or stop investing further), and maximizing the value of less successful startup assets (technology, team or physical assets) in their portfolio.
