Montfort Is located deep in the Galilee mountains in the north of Israel. Join David Hyman Israeli tour guide on this weeks Israel video tour to this majsetic and mysterious archaelogical site. Montfort castle was built by the Teutonic order of Knights during the 13th century as part of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem in the holyland. Unlike most of the fortresses of this perioud, Montfort's location does not have military advantage. It was built to serve as the Teutonic knight's headquarters, archives and treasury . To reach the castle we will depart from our car near Mitzpe Hila parking lot, and walk for about 2 KM down hill on the path marked with red colour. On the way we will see great viwes of the Kziv river forest , the Mediterranean Sea and the coast. A deep ditch was carved in the mountain to protect the castle from the south flank. The castle itself has three wings: The keep , the central administrative building and the western hanging grand hall. Excavations by the MET museum delegation (1926) and Haifa University ( 2012 - 2017) have revealed most of the fortress and the Israeli parks and nature authority have conserved the site for visits.
