The Christmas season has begun. Modern House is already filled with Christmas decorations and seasonal items. Everywhere I look, it feels festive — almost too early — but somehow perfectly on time.
A team dinner we had postponed again and again finally took place, this time folded into a year-end gathering. We went to Noryangjin Fish Market, one of Seoul’s largest and most famous seafood markets. Maeuntang, a Korean spicy fish stew, was served with sujebi added — hand-torn pieces of dough slipping into the bubbling broth. One of the staff members was incredibly skilled at tearing the dough by hand. He casually mentioned that he makes a hundred heads of kimchi at home every year. And then, I heard that our team received an award, 이달의 PD상. A certificate with the producer’s and writer’s names printed clearly on it. We are a team — and yet, not quite a team.
At the gym, my trainer gave me a Christmas gift. She always prepares these small seasonal gestures with care. It’s already been almost a year since I started going to this gym, and my splits and calf muscles feel much easier now. For some reason, lately I’ve only been wearing brown shoes. It feels like something inside me has shifted too, quietly, without me noticing when it began.
Another small year-end gathering followed, this time with people from the same industry. At Youhan in Hannam-dong, we shared Thai Bistro dishes. We moved on to another place to drink more — cocktails at Gaenari Bar. “Gaenari” is the name of a flower, and also a common kindergarten class name in Korea, chosen with the hope that people would approach the bar easily, with a childlike sense of openness. I admired the naming instantly. The bartender spoke excellent English. For a moment, I wondered if he might be from a English kindergarten class himself.

I revisited my favorite café, near my studio after a long time. Sitting quietly alone, I ate tiramisu and drew. I found myself sketching the costumes from Tristan and Isolde. They were simply too cute to ignore. Even now, the stage costumes linger in my mind like afterimages.

At Seoul Arts Center, I watched a performance by Kun-woo Paik and I Musici. I grew up listening to Vivaldi through I Musici’s recordings, and seeing them together on the same stage decades later felt overwhelmingly emotional. Four encore pieces followed — an incredible night.
Every Sunday is ballet day. My teacher, an active ballerina, is recovering from an ankle injury. Today was her first time wearing pointe shoes since surgery. She said she can’t perform The Nutcracker this year. I hope she completes her recovery safely and returns in a leading role in Sleeping Beauty next year. As for me, I hope to become better at ballet too. Truly — please.
I went to a handmade fair and saw Nowhere, a brand I love. Another booth has a cute dog pouch kit, so I bought it without hesitation. The instructions were very simple. I tried to make a dog, but it somehow turned into a polar bear. I bought a cake, walked through the Christmas market at Shinsegae Gangnam, and headed home.

Christmas always does this to me — it lifts my energy while quietly slowing everything down at the same time.
クリスマスシーズンが始まった。
モダンハウスは、すでにクリスマスの装飾や季節商品でいっぱいだ。
どこを見ても華やかで、少し早すぎる気もするけれど、不思議とちょうどいいタイミングにも感じる。
何度も先延ばしにしてきたチームの食事会が、忘年会としてようやく実現した。
訪れたのは、ソウル最大級で最も有名な海鮮市場のひとつ、鷺梁津水産市場。
韓国の辛い魚鍋・メウンタンにスジェビを入れる。
手でちぎった生地が、ぐつぐつと煮えるスープの中へ落ちていく。
スタッフのひとりが、驚くほど手際よくスジェビをちぎっていた。
彼は、毎年家でキムチを百株も漬けるのだと、何気なく話していた。
そしてその流れで、チームが「今月のPD賞」を受賞したと聞いた。
プロデューサーと作家の名前がはっきりと印刷された賞状。
私たちはチームだけれど、完全なチームでもない。
ジムでは、トレーナーがクリスマスプレゼントをくれた。
彼女はいつも、こうした季節のイベントを丁寧に用意してくれる。
このジムに通い始めて、もうすぐ一年。
開脚もふくらはぎの筋肉も、だいぶ楽になった。
なぜか最近は、茶色い靴ばかり履いている。
気づかないうちに、心の中でも何かが静かに変わり始めている気がする。
同じ業界の人たちとの、もうひとつの小さな忘年会。
ハンナム洞のYouhan Thai Bistroでタイ料理を囲む。
そのあと場所を移して、ケナリバーでカクテルを飲んだ。
「ケナリ」は花の名前であり、韓国では幼稚園のクラス名としてもよく使われる言葉。
子どものような開放感で、気軽に立ち寄ってほしいという思いから名付けられたそうだ。
そのネーミングセンスに、思わず感心してしまった。
バーテンダーは英語がとても上手で、
一瞬、英語幼稚園のケナリ組だったのかもしれない、なんて考えた。
久しぶりに、作業室の近くにあるお気に入りのカフェへ行った。
ひとり静かにティラミスを食べながら、絵を描く。
『トリスタンとイゾルデ』の舞台衣装を、無意識のうちにスケッチしていた。
可愛すぎて、どうしても描かずにはいられなかった。
今もなお、あの衣装たちが残像のように頭に残っている。
ソウル芸術の殿堂では、ペク・ゴヌとイ・ムジチの公演を鑑賞した。
私はヴィヴァルディを、イ・ムジチの演奏で聴いて育った。
何十年もの時を経て、彼らが同じ舞台に立つ姿を目にできたことは、
言葉にできないほど胸がいっぱいになる体験だった。
アンコールは四曲。
本当に、忘れられない夜。
毎週日曜日はバレエの日。
先生は現役のバレリーナで、今は足首の怪我から回復中だ。
今日は手術後、初めてトウシューズを履いた日だった。
今年は『くるみ割り人形』には出演できないそうだ。
来年は無事に復帰して、『眠れる森の美女』で主要な役を踊れますように。
そして私自身も、来年はバレエがもっと上手くなっていますように。
本当に、切実に。
ハンドメイドフェアにも足を運んだ。
好きなブランド、ナウアーを見つけて、
別のブースでは可愛い犬のポーチキットがあり、迷わず購入。
作り方はとても簡単だったはずなのに、
出来上がったのはなぜか北極熊。
ケーキを買い、新世界百貨店・江南のクリスマスマーケットを歩き、家路についた。
クリスマスはいつもそうだ。
気持ちを一気に高揚させながら、
同時に、静かにすべてを落ち着かせてくれる季節でもある。
