"What do Nepal, Madagascar, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Morocco have in common? Gen Z protests. Mostly leaderless, but primarily made of young people, a wave of protests is unfolding across the globe. They're sparked by issues like widening inequality, economic uncertainty, and nepotism in the leadership ranks. A single pop culture symbol, a black flag showing a skull and crossbones Wearing a straw hat has emerged as the primary image behind these protests. The flag is from a Japanese manga, an anime series called One Piece, which follows a crew of pirates as they take on corrupt governments. Several significant protests in the past, like the Arab Spring, have been led by younger people. While they use social media for mass mobilization, the Gen Z protesters have taken it to another level. In Nepal, for instance, protesters used TikTok, Instagram, and X to show the lavish lifestyles of politicians' children and announced planned rallies. Later, some of them used discord to suggest who to nominate as an interim leader for the country. These protests have different outcomes. In Indonesia, deadly protests forced the president to replace key economic and security ministers. In Nepal, the prime minister resigned as a result of the protests."
