Abingdon Virginia is surrounded by the Majestic Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Trail is nearby. This town encompasses several historically significant sites and was founded in 1778!

Here is 10 of the places you don't want to miss!

1- Barter Theatre which opened its doors in 1933 and even at one point allowed patrons to pay for tickets or give the value of a ticket in unsold vegetables! It is the State theater of Virginia!

2- Abingdon Farmer's Market which is open Tues (April thru September) and Sat (April- October) and has a Holiday market Sat (November until the Saturday before Christmas) Winter Market (Jan, Feb, March 1st & 3rd Sat)

3- Martha Washington Inn & Spa- this beautiful Historic Hotel began in 1832 as a residence for General Francis Preston, Sarah Buchanan Preston and their 9 children!

4- The Crooked Road: Virginia's Heritage Music Trail which includes 19 counties, 4 cities, over 50 towns, 5 regional planning districts, 2 tourism organizations, and a large number of music venues.

5- The Virginia Creeper Trail which began in 1987 and is a 34 mile multi use trail that begins in Abingdon, travels thru rolling farmland and winds up to it's highest point at Whitetop Station!

6- Historic Main Street which includes the fountain with the iconic Love sign.

7- Historic Fields- Penn 1860 Museum which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on Sep. 17, 1986.

8- White's Mill - is a historic landmark that has been providing locals with their meal and flour since the 18th century. You can even get homemade gifts like artwork, quilts, books from Appalachian writers and more while you are there!

9- The Tavern Restaurant which dates back to 1779 and has hosted Henry Clay, Louis Philippe (King of France) Pierre Charles L'Enfant and even President Andrew Jackson! It has been passed thru different hands but now is owned by Max Hermann a retired USAF Vetran, native German, and resident of Abingdon.

10- Keller Interpretive Center at Abingdon Muster Grounds- a 9 acre complex that has interactive exhibits to help visitors understand what it was like in those parts during the American Revolutionary Period. It has artifacts that were used at the Battle of Kings Mountain.

We stumbled onto this historic little town because we saw there was a Farmer's Market going on as we were passing thru and we were able to check out several things while we were there and could have spent days exploring everything. This is definitely a place we will keep in mind when we are looking for somewhere to stay for a weekend.
