यीशु ने उत्तर दिया, "शास्त्र में लिखा है: 'मनुष्य केवल रोटी से ही नहीं जीता बल्कि वह प्रत्येक उस शब्द से जीता है जो परमेश्वर के मुख से निकलता है।""

'फिर शैतान उसे यरुशलेम के पवित्र नगर में ले गया। वहाँ मंदिर की सबसे ऊँची बुर्ज पर खड़ा करके 'उसने उससे कहा, "यदि तू परमेश्वर का पुत्र है तो नीचे कूद पड़ क्योंकि शास्त्र में लिखा है:

'वह तेरी देखभाल के लिये अपने दूतों को आज्ञा देगा और वे तुझे हाथों हाथ उठा लेंगे ताकि तेरे पैरों में कोई पत्थर तक नलगे।"

"यीशु ने उत्तर दिया, "किन्तु शास्त्र यह भी कहता है, 'अपने प्रभु परमेश्वर को परीक्षा में मत डाल।""


"फिर शैतान यीशु को एक बहुत ऊँचे पहाड़ पर ले गया। और उसे संसार के सभी राज्य और उनका वैभव दिखाया। "शैतान ने तब उससे कहा, "ये सभी वस्तुएँ में तुझे दे दूँगा यदि तू मेरे आगे झुके और मेरी उपासना करे।"

फिर यीशु ने उससे कहा, "शैतान, दूर हो। शास्त्र कहता है:

'अपने प्रभु परमेश्वर की उपासना कर और केवल उसी की सेवा कर।"  "फिर शैतान उसे छोड़ कर चला गया। और स्वर्गदूत आकर उसकी देखभाल करने लगे।
