The Battle That Humbled the British: Treaty of Wadgaon, 1779

In the heart of the First Anglo-Maratha War (1775–1782), a brilliant display of indigenous strategy shook the British Empire. Maratha commander Mahadji Shinde used scorched-earth tactics and superior mobility to trap British forces near Talegaon, cutting off their supplies and escape routes.

Surrounded, starved, and outmaneuvered, the British were forced to surrender on 13 January 1779, signing the Treaty of Wadgaon—a humiliating moment for the East India Company and a glorious Maratha victory.

Though the war dragged on until 1782, the Treaty of Salbai later formalized peace, recognizing Maratha power and control. This chapter remains a symbol of Indian resilience, military brilliance, and strategic dominance—a time when colonial arrogance met indigenous intellect.
