The 'Katras Palace' is a historic palace which belonged to the Jharia Estate pre-independence. It is at a distance of 19. 5 kms from Dhanbad Railway Station near Pandey Muhalla. The Katras Palace was built in India when Zamindari was followed here, in the year 1763. This place was then the considered the residence and head-quarters of the Jharia Raj. Later with the discovery of the presence of coal here this place became one of the main business centers and was split up into the separate houses of Katras, Jharia and Nawagarh. It wasn't a much-populated place till then, when the headquarters were transferred to Dhanbad on 27 June 1980. After this major transfer, with the transfer of headquarters at Dhanbad various amenities were provided, which attracted people to habitat in the Raj. Thus then, many tourists till date visit this place to explore the vivid traces of culture and historic architecture of this place. The main attractions of this place are the Jharia Raj High School (the oldest school of the region founded in 1866), Raja Shiva Prasad College (founded in 1951 by Raja Kali Prasad Singh in memory of his father Raja Talab), a huge water tank which is being conserved now (was built by Raja Durga Prasad Singh in 1912-13). The virtue of performing Durga Puja at the Katras Palace was started by the royal family in 1861, which is still followed here. The Puja takes place at the temple near the old fort (the Purana Rajgarh, the ancestral palace of the family), the temple at the new fort and at Shira Ghar (the place where the kuldevta and the weapons of the royal family are kept). It is the major tourist spot during this period where they can spend time easily. This place is a feast for eyes, for visitors looking for traditional Indian essence and historic constructional ting. The Katras Palace can be visited throughout the year but it is suggested to visit during winters here. The palace can be visited during timings 9:00 At7:00 PM.
