In tournament tennis, there are the competitors, who battle to be a part of the event make some waves in the draw. There are dark horses, who are threats to win the whole thing but always seem to come up just short. There are the underdogs, who are usual fan favorites to grab the trophy knowing that it will have to be done the hard way. And then there are the champions, who not only win the events regularly but are athletes with champions hearts when it comes to leaving it all on the court every time.

In 2015, the Kailua Men's Night Doubles hosted a final that had a Champion vs. Dark horse feel to it. Ikaika Jobe & Dennis Lajola, a proven championship level doubles team in Hawaii, entered this event as the top seed & once again defending champions. They were going for their 4th championship together & at that point, there honestly looked to be one potential team that could possibly take them down. That dark horse team was Hendrik Bode & Nikola Petrov. In previous years, Hendrik in particular would slowly work his way up the finishing positions in Kailua, posting consistent appearances in the quarter finals & semi finals time & time again, usually losing to the likes of Dennis &/or Ikaika. The current HPU men's tennis head coach (Hendrik) & then assistant coach (Nikola) ended up channeling their days playing college tennis together (for HPU), tearing things up on the 2015 triple crown circuit, posting strong results individually & as a team in the two night doubles events prior to Kailua. They came into Kailua as the 3rd seeded team but in everyone's hearts, Hawaii tennis fans couldn't help but wonder how a match would shake out between these this dark horse pairing & the defending champs.

The fans would get their wish granted that year in the Kailua Night Doubles final!
