Golf instructor Hank Haney says the most important thing to know about playing a controlled fade is that the clubface must be slightly open to the swing path at impact.

Transcript
One of the best ways to hit more fairways
is to play a little fade from left to right.
In order to do that, there's just a couple little
minor adjustments you want to make.
One, you're gonna aim your body a little more left.
But the most important thing you could do
is feel like you're swinging
the club a little bit more left.
The reason you do that, a swing going a little more left
will hold the clubface open a little bit more
and allow you to have a little bit of a fade
from left to right.
Also, when you hit that fade,
you want that golf ball to start left.
So, it'll start a little bit left
and then fade to the center of the fairway.
So, the big emphasis, turning the body through
and swinging the club more to the left.
The more you swing the club left,
the more the ball will start left.
And the more you turn the body through,
the more that will hold the clubface open at impact,
give you just a little bit of fade, from left to right.
So, body turning through, angle your swing off to the left,
and you'll get a little fade
right to the center of the fairway.
