I'm Kurt Fearnley and I'm chair of the NDIS.

My own experience with disability is... I felt like I grew up in the 1950s but really I grew up in the 1980s. I engaged with the system and each and every time that I did engage with the system, the state-based block-funded system, I had a defeating experience, you know, not just defeating for me but defeating for my world, for my family.

And we actually retreated from all levels of government support. But I... I was the beneficiary of a community that invested in me. A town of 200 people, when they saw my mother and my father retreating they stepped in and they demanded that I was given the life that I truly believe every person with a disability in this country deserves. A life where they find that they are valued by the community around them, where they are given the support structures to be them in the community on which they live.

And that's my hopes for what the NDIS is for every person with a disability, that is the community that allows them the conversation about who they would like to be and how would they like to engage in this great country. Every single person deserves this level of advocacy, this level of support structures that would allow them to be them.
