Grand Slam Track (GST) was the most amazing and exciting announcement in many years for an awesome sport struggling to maintain fan interest: GST presented a radical new competitive format; a reported $30 million in venture capital raised by Michael Johnson, the venture's figurehead and former USA Olympic sprinting legend; and four cities of competition in 2025: Kingston, Jamaica; Miami; Philadelphia; and Los Angeles. The idea was to boost popularity of the sport in between the always sensational Olympic Games track&field every four years.

Unfortunately, Michael Johnson choked this one, big time. The occasion for this video was the cancellation of the final meet in Los Angeles under suspicious and disingenuous circumstances (despite Johnson crowing how he is "committed to transparency"), and further rumors that athlete's haven't been paid in full for prize money earned in the first three meets. Soooo much potential, but some really lame ideas that set up GST for struggle and eventual failure out of the gate.

If Michael had consulted with me prior to launch, many of the problems and shortcomings could have been avoided. For example, slicing the sport in half by eliminating field events on the argument that they are "distracting". Huh? For example, holding 3-day track meets when the sport is struggling to draw good crowds for one day action-packed meets in major US cities? Huh?

Enjoy my post-mortem analysis of Grand Slam Track. Let's hope any future track&field ventures evaluate the lessons learned here and bring in money and structure that sync's with the great momentum that track&field has around the world. The 2024 all-women Athlos meet in New York City is a great example of fantastic value added and money injection into the sport.
