As a Birth Coach, you can see and hear what a contraction looks and sounds like by the woman's behaviors and sounds she makes.

Every labor contraction has 5 phases. These are distinct when each contraction is effective or progressive.

A contraction starts, the pain increases, the pain peaks, the pain subsides, the pain goes away (except with back-labor). This is your baby telling the woman that nothing is stopping the process.

When a contraction starts, pain increases and then there's a plateau before the contractions subside is also a message your baby is giving. This time, the message is: Something is not quite right.

What's not quite right?

Either the woman has internal tension, her body is not in a position or posture the baby likes or the baby's space is being compressed.

Your ability to see and hear each contraction means you can give feedback to the birthing woman and help her adjust so labor is effective.

No one wants to be in labor longer than is reasonable. That means each contraction cannot be wasted. Until fathers developed these skills, many of us had long, long 1st or 2nd stages. We know how to prevent that.

It's hard work because it's so tempting to get into positions that back off a contraction (so they are not so intense). Don't! You want each contraction to be effective.
