Reason #1 - Check User Manual: The first thing you want to do is to check the user manual to ensure that the self-cleaning cycle was completed properly. Different brands have a listing in their manual that will advise on how to troubleshoot this issue. The range must also cool completely before it will unlock. Unplug the appliance and allow it to sit for five minutes. Then, plug it back in again to reset the oven control board.

Reason #2 - Door Latch Assembly: The door latch assembly could be keeping the oven door from opening properly. This is what holds the door closed. It usually consists of a hook, a motor or lever, and a switch that tells the control board whether it’s in the latched or unlatched position. Look for the latch and check it for visual signs of damage if you can access it.

Reason #3 - Oven Control Board: The self-cleaning function could be failing at the electronic level, in the control panel or the electronic control board. If there is an issue in the “brain” of the range, it will not respond properly as it cycles through the cleaning process.

Reason #4 - Temperature Sensor: If the cleaning cycle has ended and your oven door will not unlock, it could be due to a problem with the temperature sensor inside the oven. If your oven has an electronic control panel, it will generally display a fault code for this problem to let you know what is going on.
