Jewish leaders and organizations in California’s Bay Area are criticizing Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez following his apology for sharing online posts that promoted antisemitic conspiracy theories. Martinez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, deleted the posts and issued an apology, stating that Zionism should not be conflated with Judaism.

Community leaders argue the apology failed to adequately address the harm caused and have called for Martinez’s resignation, citing what they describe as a broader pattern of conduct. Several Jewish leaders said the mayor’s actions have contributed to fear and unease among Jewish residents, particularly amid heightened tensions following the Israel-Hamas war.

In response to growing concerns about antisemitism, Bay Area Jewish leaders recently launched a new political advocacy organization aimed at engaging more directly with lawmakers. The group says it was formed to address what members describe as increasing instances of antisemitism appearing in local politics and public discourse. Martinez has denied endorsing violence and said he did not understand the meaning of certain symbols linked to his past appearances.
