The Only Rock Village with Inhabitants | Kandovan | IRAN |

Kandovan is one of the villages in East Azerbaijan province located in the county of Osku, which dates back to a historical past of seven thousand years. This historical village boasts tourist attractions and is situated approximately 18 kilometers from the city of Osku.
In 2023, Kandovan was listed as one of the top ten tourist villages in the world by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Based on the evidence and documents left from the past, Kandovan was founded by villagers named "Hilevar" in the seventh century. These people migrated to the nearby Kandovan plains in search of a safe haven from the Mongol invasions and, after years of digging the mountains of Kandovan, settled inside them. The neighboring villages of Anserud, Amqan, and Kohenmo are in this village.
The livelihood of the people of Kandovan is often influenced by the climate of this area due to its high altitude and snow throughout the year and the gradual melting of the snow, there are natural meadows around the village, which is why pastoralism is one of the main occupations of the locals. Rainfed agriculture is also done in the mountain springs and foothills of the local terrain.
Beekeeping is another significant occupation in Kandovan, with mountain honey being one of its primary products. Dairy products, mineral water, walnuts, medicinal herbs, Doogh-Shab or grape syrup, honey, and almonds are among the local delicacies you can bring back from this village. Additionally, handicrafts such as carpets, jajims, and traditional scarves (kelaqi) are produced by the villagers.

Kandovan village is situated in the foothills of Sahand mountain range in Osku county, East Azerbaijan province. It is renowned for its rocky architecture, formed by volcanic activities of the Sahand mountains over millennia. The volcanic flows and tuffs, shaped by wind, snow, and rain over thousands of years, have carved distinctive cliff-like formations.

The architectural style of Kandovan and the ongoing life of its people within its ancient structure are exceptional in the world. Unlike Cappadocia in Turkey and the Dakota region in the United States (both known for their rock formations), Kandovan stands out as a living example of rock-hewn architecture where people still reside.
