Описание к видео Calligraphy: A Living Tradition

In the United Kingdom, calligraphy and illumination have been used to enrich official documents and commemorative books in an unbroken tradition, beginning in the early Middle Ages and still continuing today. Irene Wellington (1904-1984) was a key figure in the evolution of this practice in the twentieth century, but also explored calligraphic forms in more personal ways, to convey the meaning of a text or in the creation of a design. Tim will discuss how his own work fits into this legacy and will illustrate some of the inspirations, challenges and highlights of his career, including some of the work prepared for the Coronation of King Charles III.

Timothy Noad MA, FSSI, is a calligrapher, illuminator and heraldic artist, and a Trustee of the Irene Wellington Educational Trust. He has worked for the HM College of Arms for thirty-seven years and is also a Scribe and Illuminator to HM Crown Office, preparing illuminated documents including Letters Patent and Royal Charters. In addition, Tim has designed many coins and medals for the Royal Mint and recently was commissioned to design the Royal Cypher for King Charles III as well as the Stole with which he was invested at the Coronation.

This lecture is sponsored by the Irene Wellington Educational Trust. Irene Wellington was a key figure in the development of calligraphy in the twentieth century. She described writing as 'A living thing which [...] must grow, change & be renewed if it is to stay alive'. The Trust supports the study and practice of calligraphy in line with Wellington's vision.

Chair: Prof. Laura Cleaver (IES) and Edward Wates (Irene Wellington Trust)
