Constipation is a very common problem in children. Since it is a very common problem worldwide, this video is very important. We will discuss how to diagnose constipation and how to effectively manage it. It can be defined as: 1) Less than 3 bowel movements a week 2) Stools that are large, hard, and difficult to pass.

Constipation in kids can have various underlying reasons. The most common reason is Functional Constipation, which is often a behavioral or habitual problem. We will discuss this in detail. Additionally, there are other important causes - like "Hirschsprung's disease," which is a surgical cause for constipation. Dyssynergia or pelvic floor incoordination is also a common cause of constipation in which the child is improperly pushing while passing stools. Besides these three causes, there are other important causes like Hypothyroidism: " celiac disease " (Gluten intolerance) or some systemic problem. Certain drugs can also cause constipation as their side effects.

Since functional constipation is the most common reason, we'll talk about it in more detail in this video. Functional constipation is also known as habitual or behavioral constipation, and it contributes to around 90% of childhood constipation cases.

Functional constipation usually presents after the first year of life. It starts between the ages of 1 and 5 years. The main mechanism behind this is that the child involuntarily or voluntarily holds their stools, and if stools stay in your body for longer, they become hard and wide. You might have noticed that a child hasn't passed stools for a day or two, and when they try to pass them, they experience pain. As they feel pain or discomfort, they develop fear which leads to further holding of stools. Child is trapped in this vicious cycle leading to constipation.

Understanding this cycle is Important because there are two main pillars of management - Proper use of laxatives (stool softener) and toilet training which break this cycle of holding and postponing stools. A diet sufficient in fiber and fluid is also important.
