STORYLINE:

Pope Francis asked for spiritual support for children in the Vatican on Saturday, saying "They are the ones who pay the real bill for the war."

The pope spoke while receiving a delegation of the communities that have donated the nativity scene and the Christmas tree set up in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.

Francis said: "While we contemplate Jesus, God made man, small, poor, helpless. We cannot help but think of the drama that the inhabitants of the Holy Land are experiencing, showing to these brothers and sisters of ours, especially to children and their parents, our closeness and our spiritual support."

At the end of the audience, the pope paused to pray in front of the nativity scene in Paul VI Hall.

Later on Saturday, the nativity scene in St. Peter's Square will be unveiled and the Christmas tree will be lit.
