Service lanes are often overlooked, yet they are the key to transforming an ordinary road into a true superhighway.
In this report, we examine how service lane construction along the James Gichuru–Rironi corridor is unlocking the full capacity of one of Nairobi’s most critical western routes. While the main carriageway was completed years ago, missing service lanes, interchanges, and supporting infrastructure left the highway operating below its intended design.

We track current construction activity along sections including Nairobi School, Kianda School, Quickmart, CAK and 87 Junction, where revived works are now focused on completing what was left unfinished. Using verified project data, this report explains why the project stalled, why service lanes matter, and how their completion is key to Nairobi’s next superhighway.
