Scenario 1
Standard D.4- Rich media are provided in multiple formats for ease of use and access in order to address diverse student needs.
You are reviewing a fifth grade mathematics course.
Much of the content is text-based; there is one video at the beginning of the course.
When you come to National Standard D.4 concerning rich media, ask yourself, “Does one video constitute rich media for this course?” In this case, no.
You would rate this course “Unsatisfactory-1” for National Standard D.4.
While the course does have one video, it could take advantage of more videos, online games for practice, live web chatting with the instructor, etc. To pass, this course would need to rate a three or four. The provider would be offered an opportunity to add appropriate rich media in order to pass this standard.
Scenario 2
Standard C.3- Ongoing, varied, and frequent assessments are conducted throughout the course to inform instruction.
You are reviewing a high school drawing course.
The course contains five modules with a true/false quiz at the end of each. While this is “ongoing” and “frequent,” assessment, it is not “varied.”
This course would likely earn a rating of 2, or “Somewhat satisfactory” as the assessments are present, but inadequate to gauge mastery for this particular course, drawing. It didn’t rate a three or four, so this course would not pass for this standard. The provider would be offered an opportunity to add varied assessments in order to pass this standard.
