Stretching from the dramatic Ox Bend at the Shanxi–Inner Mongolia border in the north to Yajiao Mountain and the ancient Laoying Fortress in the south, the Shanxi Pianguan section of the Great Wall No. 1 Tourist Highway is the brightest jewel in the “frontier Great Wall necklace” that runs north–south across northern Shanxi. Along its route it strings together more than 70 scenic spots, earning Pianguan the nickname “golden corridor of the county with the best Great Wall castles.”

Inside Pianguan County alone, nine separate Great Walls march from north to south—First, Second, Third, Fourth, Inner, Yellow River, and more—totaling over 126 km. Built from the Ming through the Qing dynasties, their construction ranges from stone blocks and tamped earth to brick cladding, giving the area the highest concentration of Great Wall styles anywhere in China. Along the way you can spot dozens of beacon towers at a single glance; their signal fires once flashed warnings in sequence, offering a vivid 3-D display of ancient layered defense systems.

The Great Wall No. 1 Tourist Highway’s official “0 km” marker and cultural rest stop are located right here, making it the go-to selfie spot for road-tripping Chinese auto enthusiasts.
