Seventeen lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, all elected under the Peoples Democratic Party, have defected to the All Progressives Congress in a dramatic shift that has unsettled the state’s political landscape. Led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the lawmakers cite internal disputes within the PDP and a desire to align with the President, a move the PDP has described as a betrayal of the mandate entrusted to them. While FCT Minister Nyesom Wike called the development unfortunate, he maintained that the lawmakers acted within constitutional provisions. With fresh tensions reopening old wounds, questions now arise about internal cohesion, leadership credibility, legal standing, and what this means for the PDP’s strength ahead of 2027.
