History of United Nations Day

The idea for the UN was started on April 25, 1945, during the UN Conference on International Organization in San Francisco.

The UN was created officially when a UN charter was approved on October 24,1945.

The intention of the United Nations, an intergovernmental organisation, is to create a form of cooperation among all the governments of the world.

The United Nations Day was first celebrated on October 24, 1948.

The UN Proposed that this Day should be a public holiday in all its members since 1971.

There were also calls to make this day as an international public holiday as to bring attention to the work, role, and achievements of the UN

and its family of specialised agencies.

UN has been magnificent in the areas like human rights, support in regions of famine, settlement of refugees, eradication of disease, and promotion of health.

UN’s family of specialised agencies are the

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR),
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

World Food Programme (WFP),
World Health Organization (WHO),
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),
International Labour Organization (ILO),
United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and much more.
