This is the first video lecture in a course on the philosophy of law. In this chapter, Hart summarizes John Austin's habit- and sanction-based theory of law. Austin's behaviorist (or very nearly behaviorist) theory of law is presented by the introduction and step-by-step adaptation of a simple gunman scenario. The concepts of internal supremacy and external independence are also explained by Hart. These are the notions that make up Austin's conception of sovereignty.
