Описание к видео From Earth to Orbit - IAC 2025 Sydney

'From Earth to Orbit: ASTROBEAT's interdisciplinary approach to space exploration and public engagement' presentation at the 76th International Astronautical Congress in Sydney.

Authors: Dr Leonardo Barilaro, Prof. Matteo Marciano

Abstract: The ASTROBEAT project represents an innovative fusion of science and art, focusing on space music as a powerful tool for public engagement and education. ASTROBEAT’s unique approach integrates original music compositions performed and streamed live from the International Space Station (ISS), alongside a scientific experiment focused on space debris mitigation and spacecraft repair.
The project’s outreach strategy is built around the concept of "Music from Space", which transcends traditional educational boundaries by using music as a dynamic language to connect with diverse audiences. ASTROBEAT has successfully engaged thousands of people worldwide through live-streamed events and related activities, which feature evocative compositions inspired by space exploration and cosmic phenomena, such as Moon Seeds and Black Sun. These events are paired with thought-provoking discussions on the symbiosis of science and art, aiming at a deeper understanding of space missions and their societal impact.
A key innovation of ASTROBEAT’ space art side is its commitment to cutting-edge recording techniques, particularly in capturing piano performances with experimental methods that push the boundaries of sound design and auditory experience.
ASTROBEAT’s outreach efforts are further amplified through collaborations with renowned artists, including Grammy-nominated cellist Tina Guo, composer Steve Mazzaro, and quantum physicist-ballerina Merritt Moore. These partnerships have resulted in visually stunning music videos and multimedia experiences that blend celestial imagery, choreography, and space-inspired soundscapes, creating an immersive experience that resonates with both space enthusiasts and the general public.
Additionally, the ASTROBEAT initiative has extended its impact through the Space Music Contest for NYU Abu Dhabi students, an innovative competition encouraging young composers to create music inspired by space exploration. This contest, developed in collaboration with NYUAD’s music and science faculties, provides students with the opportunity to have their compositions broadcast from the ISS, bridging the gap between academia, art and cutting-edge space research.
The project’s innovative approach has been evaluated through audience feedback, social media engagement metrics, and media coverage, demonstrating significant reach and impact. These events have not only increased public awareness of space exploration but also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing space science and technology.
The lessons learned from ASTROBEAT’s approach offer valuable insights for future outreach initiatives aimed at boosting global support for space exploration.
