Michael Tilson Thomas has announced his retirement from conducting with an 80th Birthday Concert to be given on 26 April 2025 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He became its 11th Music Director in 1995 and subsequently took the title Music Director Laureate at the close of the 2019-20 Season. Among the many recordings he has made with the SFSO is one entitled "Masterpieces in Miniature" issued in 2014. This features a dozen short works by a wide range of composers from Mahler, Debussy and Rachmaninoff to Dvorak, Sibelius and Ives. Here from its varied selection of music is a favourite piece by Frederick Delius, notable for being one of the few English composers in MTT's immense discography, and beautifully played by the San Francisco Symphony.
