Hi, it's Alvin from Priceline Pharmacy West Brunswick.
And today we are going to talk about turmeric or CURCUMIN.
Turmeric or curcumin has been in the press lately, especially in West Brunswick. It’s really, really popular. You’ve probably seen and drunk some turmeric lattes across the road from some of the great cafes!

Turmeric has been used in cooking, in Indian cooking for quite a while. So now turmeric is actually available in pharmaceutical preparations in a dose form of a capsule. We started to see a lot of patients using it. And in fact, our pharmacists are starting to recommend it quite a lot now.

How does it work?

Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory. The active component of turmeric is curcumin. It is involved in one of the pathways for inflammation in the body. Inflammation is not necessarily a bad thing. The body produces its own anti-inflammatory process to settle down any excess inflammation. But when inflammation becomes chronic and long term, taking an anti-inflammatory will be beneficial for you .

Three reasons why curcumin is different to your regular anti-inflammatory (that you can get over the counter like your nurofen or similar):

1.Turmeric or curcumin is gentle on the stomach.
2.It can also be used with other medications as well to help relieve pain.
3.It also has minimal drug interactions.

The added benefit of curcumin is that it is a natural antioxidant.
Antioxidants are really good at scavenging free radicals into the body. Our body produces free radicals due to the environment and toxins in the environment and from the food and nutrition that we put into our system. Curcumin is really good at getting rid of those free radicals.

Curcumin is also really good at aiding in digestion in the gut. It’s really good at reducing inflammation in the gut and helps heal our gut a lot better as well.

So three common questions that we get all the time when we recommend Curcumin in the pharmacy:

Can we take it with other medications?
Yes you can. As I mentioned you can take it with other pain killers as well. If you’ve got any other inflammation medication that you’re using, Curcumin is a really good addition.


Does it taste bad?
You know, we see turmeric in the fruit shop around the corner that is red and orange and it may appear to have a funny taste. But the preparations that you get in the capsule in the pharmacy has no taste at all because it's got the coating around the capsule.

As you know I’ve been interchanging the terms Curcumin and turmeric. What’s the difference? We get this question all the time. Turmeric is the actual broad spectrum name of the product. And the active ingredient in turmeric is Curcumin.

So you know we’ve helped use Curcumin with customers to help them taper away from their anti-inflammatory meds which may slowly overtime degrade the stomach lining .
We’ve used Curcumin in addition to panadol and panadol-osteo for these patients. We’ve also used to help heal their guts.
