Electrostatic air filterThere are several ways to clear air in the room of foreign particles, for example of regular dust.One of the most efficient ways is to use electrostatics, i.e. an electronic filter. It can clear air not only of dust but also of soot, aerosol particles, and other fine-dispersed substances. It is especially important to clear air in the rooms where people work with pharmaceuticals and microelectronics, as well as in production workshops which may contain hazardous concentrations of explosive aerosols or other harmful substances. Electrostatic filters have proven to be extremely useful in such cases.So what is the design of such filters?The main component of the filter is a set of metal plates with metal threads strained between them. By creating potential difference from several kilovolts between threads and plates you can generate an electric field between them.At such conditions a corona discharge appears on the surface of threads. The discharge resembles the one which appears on the wires of power lines. This provides ion current from threads to plates.When air passes in the space between the plates dust particles acquire their own charge, i.e. they ionize. As a result they are attracted to the plates with an opposite charge sign.Harmful particles are localized on dust collectors and can be removed. The air is cleared at this point. In general this is quite a simple device which is sometimes called plasma ionizer.One of the advantages of electrostatic air filter is that it can clear air of very fine dust, with the size less than a micrometer. The filter clears air of soot and smoke which is also considered to be aerosol consisting of small-sized solids.Modern industrial filters are furnished with additional cleaning elements. For instance, they can have a prefilter for removing larger particles, or output filter components which sometimes use active carbon for final cleaning. Such appliances consume considerable amounts of energy but are very efficient as they can remove over 95% of pollution in rooms with the area of several dozen square meters.
