Arles, France - Walking in Van Gogh's Footsteps

Описание к видео Arles, France - Walking in Van Gogh's Footsteps

On February 20th, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh arrived in Arles. During the 18 months he stayed here, he produced not less than 187 paintings and drawings developing an expressive, individual painting style characterized by bold colors and dynamic brushstrokes. Visiting Arles was more than a stopover to overnighted on the Quays of Rhône, it was an immersive experience in art and history altogether.

The easiest way to walk in Van Gogh's Footsteps is to follow the Van Gogh Trail, a self-guided walking tour that takes you to various locations where the artist set up his easel. The trail is marked by panels showcasing reproductions of Van Gogh’s paintings alongside the actual scenery that inspired them. The Yellow House, Place du Forum where Van Gogh painted "Café Terrace at Night." or The Arles Amphitheatre that can be seen in the background of some of Van Gogh's works are just some examples of the spots you can enjoy during a walking tour.

The challenge of painting at night intrigued van Gogh so he chose for “Starry Night” to capture the reflections of the gas lighting in Arles across the glimmering blue water of the Rhône. We overnighted on the Quays of Rhône at the approximate position where Van Gogh produced the well known artwork and we visited a city worth of 2500 years of history with monuments from antiquity to Roman times.
