Описание к видео Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery Explained | How is DBS surgery done?

In this video, we're going to discuss the Deep Brain Stimulation surgery. This surgery is used to treat a variety of conditions, including Parkinson's disease, depression, and drug addiction.

We'll explore the different types of DBS surgery and discuss the benefits and risks of this surgery. We'll also discuss the potential side effects of DBS surgery and how to prepare for and recover from the surgery.

What is Deep brain stimulation?

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes and electrical stimulation to treat a number of conditions.
For example
Parkinson’s disease
Essential tremor
Dystonia
Epilepsy
Obsessive- compulsive disorder.

Procedure of DBS
A stereotactic frame is attached to the patient’s head.
MRI or CT scans are used to map the areas in brain for placement of electrode.
A skin incision is made across the top of the head to expose the skull.
Small burr holes are drilled in the skull to pass the electrode into the brain.
A thin wire lead is implanted with electrodes at the tips into mapped areas of the brain.
A plastic cap is placed over the burr hole to hold the lead in place.
A coil of wires is left under the scalp for later attachment to the extension wire and the stimulator.
The scalp incision is closed with sutures and a bandage is applied.
After few days, the surgeon implants neurostimulator under the skin in the chest, near the collarbone.
The extension wire from the lead is attached to the neurostimulator.
Post Procedure
A few weeks after surgery, the neurostimulator in the chest is activate in the doctor’s office.
The doctor can easily program the neurostimulator using a special remote control.
The amount of stimulation is customised to an individual’s condition.
