The Legend of Tom Long : Death at the Crossroads.

Who was Tom Long? Highwayman? Ghost? Or something stranger?

This is the tale of Highwayman of Minchinhampton Common, where ancient landscape, folk memory, myth and ancient history intersect.

I visit Tom Long's Post on the Common, where Tom Long is said to have been hanged. The crossroads once being the place of the local gallows.

It is also the place he used to commit robberies, and Tom Long's ghost - on horseback - can still be seen on the Cirencester road.

His ghost can also be seen stalking one of his favourite haunts - the Amberley Inn on the edge of the Common, where I tell the story of Tom Long from the folklore.

Then I visit the Minchinhampton Longstone - a neolithic standing stone nearby - where I have a run in with the police.

There is a theory that Tom Long is not a Highwayman at all, but was once the name of a now destroyed Sarcen Stone.

Is Tom Long in fact a link with the ancient neolithic past?
