Both the states and the federal government provide billions of dollars in higher education support through spending programs.

Another significant but less obvious source of support they provide for higher education comes through the tax code. The federal government and the states offer a range of tax provisions aimed to help offset postsecondary costs. However, these tax expenditures often do not receive much attention or scrutiny, and are frequently excluded from debates over the scale and nature of higher education spending.

Many states lack the cost estimates they would need to help them understand how these tax provisions compare in size to other postsecondary investments.

This webinar highlights a recent report from The Pew Charitable Trusts that provides information on characteristics and costs of federal and state higher education personal income tax benefits (like the deductions and credits that help students and families afford college). It will show how these tax benefits fit into the broader context of federal and state support for higher education and offer a state legislative perspective on using the tax code to offset higher education costs.
