Tea tree oil is an essential oil known for its antiseptic and antifungal properties. Now it has been shown that tea tree oil is also effective as an acne treatment.

It addresses two out of the four main causes of acne, fighting inflammation and killing bacteria on your skin. But there is no evidence showing that tea tree oil works with acne scars as it does not affect melanin formation or transportation.

How to use tea tree oil for acne?

1. Choose the right concentration

For tea tree oil to be proven effective, the concentration of the product should be at least 5%. Most products have less tea tree oil
and sometimes the concentration is not printed on the labels.

If tea tree oil is not listed under the first five ingredients,
then it probably is not high enough for the product to be effective.

2. The best way to use tea tree oil for acne, is to apply the oil topically as a cream or gel.

You can either rub it all over your face or if the concentration is high enough, you can use it as a spot treatment. You can simply dab the gel over an existing pimple and watch it heal much faster.

Some stronger gels can also be used as a prevention in problem areas such as around the mouth, nose, jawline or forehead.

3. Use pure 100% tea tree oil as a spot treatment

Be extremely careful and always first test it on a part of your skin that is not visible.

Use pure tea tree oil only on a small area of your skin or dilute it before using it.

4. Use diluted tea tree oil as a spot treatment

Do not dilute tea tree oil in water or olive oil. Instead you should use a carrier oil such as primrose oil, hemp oil or rosehip oil. Take a teaspoon of your carrier oil and mix it with 5 drops of pure tea tree oil and you will get a 5% concentration.

Use a cotton swab to apply the mixture to the affected area. Do not rub it or coat the entire face, just gently dab the pimples.

5. Use a tea tree oil face wash, scrub or toner

Face washes are not very effective against acne. They are usually not long enough on the skin for the ingredients to be properly absorbed.

6. Combine tea tree oil with other anti-acne ingredients

For better results, you should combine it with products
that address the acne causing issues of excessive sebum
and keratin production in the body.

You can for instance combine tea tree oil with salicylic acid and green tea creams and then you would cover all the bases of an effective acne treatment.
