Once a bustling hub connecting the old city and the bustling market, Shiba Ladder is now a living testimony to Chongqing's tenacity and charm. Probably in the Ming Dynasty, there was a well here, and the residents nearby drank water from this well. The well was exactly 18 stone steps away from the residents' homes, so people called this place "Shiba Ladder". During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Chongqing was the gateway to Sichuan, with convenient land and water transportation, and many merchants stopped here for transit. Therefore, the area from the lower half of the city to Chaotianmen was a prosperous place at that time. At this time, the area from Shiba Ladder to the upper half of the city was relatively remote, and the military training ground was set up nearby. As commerce and trade prospered, people began to settle down and work in the upper half of the city, and Shiba Ladder served as a passage connecting the upper and lower half of the city.


十八梯曾经是连接老城区和热闹市场的繁华枢纽，如今已成为重庆坚韧不拔和魅力的活生生的见证。大概是在明朝的时候，这里本来有口水井，附近的居民都吃这口井里的水，这口水井距离居民的住处正好十八步石梯，因此人们把这里称作“十八梯”。明清时期，重庆是入川门户，陆路水路两栖交通便捷，往来商贾也多在此停留中转，因此彼时下半城至朝天门一带是繁华之地。此时，十八梯至上半城一带相对偏僻，军队教场设立在附近。随着商贸繁荣，人们也开始在上半城安居乐业，十八梯作为连接上下半城的通道。
