How is Styrofoam Made?

Описание к видео How is Styrofoam Made?

Have you ever wondered how Styrofoam is made?

Styrofoam is a form of expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), and is produced from small polystyrene beads, a plastic derived from petroleum. These beads are heated with steam, causing them to expand up to 50 times their original size as pentane gas inside them is activated, making them puff up like popcorn. After expansion, the beads are placed into molds and steamed again, which fuses them together into solid foam blocks. This process shapes the material into various products, such as cups, insulation panels, and packing materials. Made up of about 98% air, Styrofoam is extremely lightweight and has excellent insulating properties, making it ideal for keeping beverages hot and protecting fragile items during shipping.

Despite its utility, Styrofoam has significant environmental drawbacks. It’s derived from non-renewable petroleum and takes centuries to decompose, contributing to long-term pollution if not disposed of properly. Recycling is challenging because of its low density and large volume. When recycled, Styrofoam is compressed into dense blocks that can be melted down and reused in products like picture frames and baseboards. Reducing its use and finding more eco-friendly alternatives are crucial steps toward minimizing its environmental impact.
