In this video, I show two eastbound grain trains in East Lansing, MI. Filming from Hagadorn Rd. we see G089-18 and G076-21 head east to Plymouth after loading at MAC in Newago and ADM in Grand Ledge respectively. The night going into November 21st brought the season's first snowfall, making for a great background, though by the second train, the snow had subsided to a light rain.
On November 13th, 90-car empty grain train G090-12 departed Plymouth on their way to Grand Rapids. Likely due to the way crew certifications work, they became G090 at Plymouth after running up from The South as G126. G090 continued to Grand Rapids were it was interchanged to Marquette Rail to be taken north to Newago to be filled at Michigan Agricultural Commodities. In Grand Rapids, the original power, CSXT engines 717 and 57 were put on M327-15 to Chicago. It was noted that 57 was trail-only at this time.
A few days later, G077-19 departed Plymouth early in the morning on their way to Grand Ledge. Prior to Plymouth, they had the G802 symbol. G077 had solo-unit 3229 take the entire 91 car train west. By this time, Marquette Rail had returned G090 (now, as a load, G089) to Grand Rapids however there was no power available. On November 20th, M326-20 brought five engines to Grand Rapids, CSXT 964, 5479, 7085, 7302 and 7091. The former two were kept for M327-21 and the latter three would be used to take the two trains east.
Early in the morning on November 21st, G089 began building their train, placing 7085 on the head end with 7302 and 7091 on the back. G076's crew would ride the 7091 where it would be dropped in Grand Ledge to pair with 3229. After dropping the third unit, G089 continued east where we caught it at Hagadorn Rd. CH 82.8.
Of note was 7302, which was likely just released from the paint shop. Sister unit 7301 had been released on 11/06. All three rebuilds were in pristine condition, reflecting the landscape adjacent to them. This was likely one of 7302's first revenue-earning runs.
Later that day, G076-21 finished putting their train together. Upon hearing them depart via Broadcastify, I walked back to Hagadorn Rd. where they too proceeded east to Plymouth. It sounded like both trains would be parked at Joy Rd. (CC 84.2) however there is not enough room for multiple trains (without blocking many crossings) so it was likely parked at Milepost 25 (CH 25).
After some research from https://trainiax.net/mephase-geac4400..., it was determined that 7085 and 7091 were CM44AH rebuilds, and 7302 was a CM44AC, with the "AH" designation meaning heavily-ballasted (with high-adhesion trucks, vs radial steering trucks).
The consists included:
G090-12 with 717 and 57 leading 90 cars.
G089-18 with 7085 leading 90 cars, with 7302 as end-DPU.
G076-21 with 7091 and 3229 leading 91 cars.
As always, thank you for watching!
