Elijah Lester is from Arlington Virginia and is a junior at Yorktown High School. He studies piano with Paul Bratcher and has performed under the tutelage of Paul Carr at the Jazz Academy of Music. His biggest musical influences include Kenny Kirkland, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Kelly, Chick Corea, and Red Garland. His favorite recording is Straight No Filter by Hank Mobley and in his spare time, he loves watching sports and movies with his family.

Joe Henderson (April 24, 1937 – June 30, 2001) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. In his over four-decade-long career, Henderson appeared on more than 30 albums, the majority of which were recorded with Blue Note records. The title track from his second Blue Note album, “Inner Urge,” sprung from a difficult time in the artist’s life. He had just finished his time in service with the U.S. Army, which had taken him across Europe, playing in a touring show to entertain soldiers. After returning to the United States, he soon moved to New York, a city that proved to be a difficult place for him. “Inner Urge” serves as a reflection on this challenging time. On this time in his life, Henderson said, “I was consumed by an inner urgency which could only be satisfied through this tune. During that period, I was coping with the anger and frustration that can come of trying to find your way in the maze of New York and of trying to adjust to the pace you have to set in hacking your way in that city in order to just exist.”
