BJP MLA Narayan Tripathi from Maihar Seat of Satna district, raised demand for separate Vindhya Pradesh. He started andolan all across the cities of then Vindhya Pradesh.

On 25 January 1950, Vindhya Pradesh came into existence. However in 1956 this state was merged in Madhya Pradesh (then newly formed). Since then no major protest was seen in Vindhya Pradesh for separate state.

During 2018, Kamalnath led congres party formed government in the state of Madhya Pradesh. In July 2019, BJP MLA Narayan Tripathi did cross voting in assembly. Tripathi and one another MLA Sharad Kol voted in favor of congress despite the fact that BJP decided not to cast their votes for this bill. Since then it was expected that Narayan Tripathi may resign from BJP and can join hands of congress again. Notably, Narayan Tripathi was a Congress MLA from Maihar seat, during 2013 elections. But in 2016, Tripathi left congress and joined BJP. After this Narayan won two elections from BJP ticket in 2016 bypoll and 2018 assembly elections.

In March 2020, congress government fell and BJP took the power. Since then, Narayan Tripathi is struggling to create a respectful space and position in BJP. Going against the policy of state BJP, Narayan Tripathi started a campaign for separate Vindhya Pradesh
