In India, The Tamil Nadu government has announced that it would observe February 9 as ‘Bonded Labour System Abolition Day’. Tamil Nadu is the first state in the country to make such an announcement.

Though the TN government has taken several measures such as formulating and introducing a state action plan and standard operating procedures to abolish the bonded labour system, the lack of awareness among the stakeholders and law enforcing authorities has hindered progress. The department of labour has proposed to observe February 9 as an anti-bonded labour day to create awareness among the public, especially the vulnerable communities, about the laws and provisions available to combat it.

“It is also aimed to aid the government’s vision to make the state a bonded labourer free state,” additional chief secretary of the department of labour and employment Mohamed Nasimuddin said in the government order.
