The United States Air Force accepted the US Air Force's new Airborne High Energy Laser (AHEL) for flight testing aboard an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship.

Pentagon-sponsored research will exhibit ever-smaller, more compact lasers, down to the scale. However, the laser possesses a unique capability that no other weapon does: it is capable of striking stealthily. The laser is completely silent, and the beam is imperceptible.

The AC-130J Ghostrider, a development of the gunships that earned a stellar reputation during the Vietnam War, already carries a fearsome array of weapons, which the laser will augment rather than replace.
