In this video, we're diving into a fascinating yet rare incident involving a dual engine flameout on an ATR 72-600 operated by IndiGo Airlines.

On May 2nd, 2025, an IndiGo ATR 72-212A, registration VT-IRA, was performing flight 6E-7742 from Jaipur to Chandigarh, India. During descent into Chandigarh Airport’s Runway 11, the aircraft encountered heavy rain, which led to an extremely rare occurrence: both engines experienced a temporary flameout, one after the other.

Fortunately, both PW127M engines automatically restarted within seconds thanks to the ATR’s Automatic Relight System. The passengers were unaware anything had happened, and the flight landed safely without any emergency declaration.

Turboprop engines like the PW127M are gas turbines. They include:
A compressor
A combustion chamber
A turbine that drives the propeller

Inside the combustion chamber, fuel and compressed air mix and burn continuously. During engine start, igniters (like spark plugs) are used to ignite this mixture. Once started, the flame sustains itself like a blowtorch.

As an ATR instructor, I can say this was a well-handled situation by both the aircraft systems and the crew. The fact that both flameouts were managed automatically and without incident is a testament to the robustness of ATR’s engine control systems.

Incidents like this are incredibly rare, but they serve as a reminder of the complex interactions between weather, engine performance, and aircraft systems. We’ll keep an eye on the investigation results to see what new insights or safety measures might arise.
