A decade after the Belt and Road Initiative was announced, Russia’s initial resistance to the plan has given way to collaboration with China to integrate with the Eurasian Economic Union. Facing economic sanctions from the Ukraine conflict, Moscow’s weakened dominance over Central Asia has forced it to engage with Beijing. The uneasy alliance to boost trade and transport across Central Asia remains fraught with challenges. As Western forces enter the fray, Central Asia has to navigate through the strained and opportunistic nature of multilateral relations in power politics, especially Sino-Russian relations.
